The Buccaneer tennis team competed in the Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., last Thursday and Friday.
In the main draw doubles, Roberto Fernandez and Pablo Sahagun defeated Jacob Nordwall and Joakim Peterson from Charlotte 8-6 to advance to the round of 16 on last Thursday.
The number six seed, Virginia Commonwealth’s Florian Marquardt and Pedro Nieto, defeated Fernandez and Sahagun 8-3 to continue in the tournament.
Sahagun was the lone ETSU representative in the main draw singles tournament.
His first opponent was Mike Duquette from the University of Virginia.
Sahagun won his match, 6-2 and 6-0.
In the round of 32, Sahagun was defeated by the number three seed of the tournament, Marcio Petrone from the University of North Carolina.
The ITA Region II Championships continue through Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
In earlier tournament action, Buccaneer junior Roberto Fernandez defeated Sasa Ljumic of Campbell, 6-3 and 6-4 in the first round of qualifying singles.
Fernandez then defeated Glauco Nascimento of Hampton, 6-4, 2-6 and 6-3 in the second round.
Fernandez then fell to Derrick Spice of Wake Forest in the quarterfinals by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
