The College of Education is one of the few colleges on campus that has an active Diversity Team at ETSU.
The Diversity Team is made up of faculty and staff, administrators and students.
“The program has been in existence for six to seven years, but only really active for two,” explained Dr. Barbara Beauchamp, instructor of human development and learning.
The program has taken the line of the university’s mission statement and made it a reality, so people can be aware of all the diverse cultures on campus.
The Diversity Team focuses on the sharing of information of the diversity that is celebrating that month. Each month, the third floor foyer on the main entrance of Warf-Pickel will be decorated as a source of information for classes and people who are interested in diverse cultures.
“It gives the classroom a starting point of information,” Beauchamp said.
Dr. Patricia Robertson, department chairperson of human development and learning, said, “The display helps celebrate who you are individually and serves as affirmation.”
The Diversity Team has been able to purchase a couple of banners to hang in front of Warf-Pickel to celebrate diversity. The month of November is Native American month. There will be a display in the foyer throughout the month.
A web site is currently under development for all teachers to access information to infuse diversity into their curriculum.
The Diversity Team is also working on other projects. They are in the process of exploring a mentor system for the College of Education students.
