Members of the State of Franklin Environmental Society recently established a new scholarship endowment in the ETSU Foundation for students from Greene and Washington Counties who are pursuing a degree in environmental health.
The department of environmental health will award the first scholarship for the fall semester 2002. The scholarship will then be awarded yearly.
“The scholarship is need-based and can be renewed here,” said Marion Light, president of State of Franklin Environmental Society. “We gave East Tennessee State $10,000. The award can be given to any freshman or undergraduate student,” she said.
The State of Franklin Environmental Society was founded in 1985 in response to ground water contaminations of the residents in Fall Branch, Haws Crossroads and Bethesda communities.
This non-profit citizen action corporation was instrumental in providing technical and monetary assistance to protect the groundwater of these communities through the establishment of the Clear Creek Watershed.
“This scholarship is a labor of love from the people of Fall Branch, Hawes Crossroad and Bethesda communities,” Light said.
“They want to see what we have started continued.
