Several members of the men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the West Virginia Invitational last weekend.
The Lady Bucs received a first place finish from Chantelle Vernon in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.64 seconds.
With her victory, Vernon of Markham, Ontario, broke the school record for the indoor 60 by .22 seconds formerly held by Tracie George.
George set the record in 1996, running 7.68 seconds.
Natasha Peyton placed sixth in the 60 with a time of 8.12 after running 7.93 in the preliminary round. Peyton also placed second in the 200 with a time of 26.59, just .08 seconds behind Kenyetta Conway of West Virginia University.
In the 400, the Lady Bucs placed three among the top four with Uloma Nwagbara finishing first in a time of 58.37.
Jennifer Howard placed third in 58.81 with Ashely Taylor placing fourth in 59.36.
Kim Simmons placed 11th in 1:02.96.
Earning the Lady Bucs’ third individual victory of the meet was Roseline Addo in the 800-meter run. Addo’s winning time was 2:16.05.
The Lady Bucs’ 4×400-meter relay team (Taylor, Howard, Addo and Nwagbara) also recorded a victory with a time of 3:53.12.
On the men’s side freshmen distance runners Brad Yewer and James Grufferty competed for the Bucs.
Yewer placed second in the mile run with a time of 4:30.16 and fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:02.73.
Grufferty placed fourth in the 3000, being timed at 9:09.02.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action on Jan. 18 at the Appalachian Invitational.
