The Student Government Association began a new semester Tuesday, starting with a guest speaker from the Sodexho Corporation.
This is one of the companies bidding for the contract for food service on campus.
The previous contract, which is held by the Aramark Corporation, expires this year.
Mr. Joe Lawrence, account executive for Sodexho, told the Senate that his company was conducting dining surveys on both the 15th and 16th in the Culp Center.
Those who participate receive a free two-liter coke.
Next, Dr. Sally Lee, in her remarks as advisor, highlighted the need for the Senate to review the projects which it funds through 606.
Pointing out a particular art exhibit as an example, Lee stressed the importance for SGA to show its support as well as to examine what it supports with 606 funds.
“We, from 606, spend a large amount of our money supporting art, presentations, [and so forth]. I encourage you to go see this stuff. You’re funding it, see if you should be,” Lee said.
After Lee concluded, President Chad Reed spent time talking about the SGA Awareness Week.
He laid out both the basic format of the program as well as stating the importance of informing students about SGA and getting them involved.
The Senate also confirmed two important appointments.
One was the SGA Election Commission.
This body, which is called for in the SGA Constitution, serves to regulate the elections to insure fairness and to approve material used in campaigns.
The Commission is made up of members from different organizations such as the Resident Hall Association, who are then barred from running for SGA offices the year they serve on the Commission.
The other confirmation was Reed’s appointment to the office of Secretary of Appropriation.
Aaron Caton will now serve in this position, replacing former Secretary Ronnie Keller.
In his resignation, which became official before the meeting began, Keller sighted that he was unable to continue in the position due to conflicts with his schedule.
