It seems that the Lady Bucs had a new surge of confidence this past Saturday as they defeated the Wofford Lady Terriers, 78-67, in Memorial Center.
“I felt like if we could hang on and get this win that it could really help boost our confidence,” head coach Karen Kemp said of the victory.
Junior forward Misty Copas and sophomore forward Lauren Trantham made nice contributions to the game, with Copas scoring 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds and Trantham scoring 12 points with 15 rebounds.
Freshman guard Ashley Reed also made a nice three-pointer for a 72-61 lead with 1:59 left in the game.
“Megan Jackson’s defense was also key for us,” Kemp said. “She had to really work hard for those 16 points.”
Indeed, the defense against Wofford senior forward Jenny Nett was no easy task.
Nett had 16 points for the game, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Ranked seventh on her team’s all-time scoring list, Nett has also been one of the team’s strongest players over the last three seasons.
Wofford’s other senior forward, Cathey Franks was also a force to be reckoned with after her successful recovery from last season’s injury. She has helped her team improve in both scoring and rebounding.
Yet Jackson came through for her own team.
“I was getting so many good passes where I needed it,” Jackson said.
The score was 47-31 at 16:37 in the first half, with a successful layup from Copas. Afterwards, Wofford began to catch up in a series of quick plays that brought ETSU’s lead to only one point.
The score continued to cut it close, until the Lady Bucs scored 17 final points, Reed making seven of them.
This victory will take the Bucs to 3-7 in the Southern Conference, and 8-11 for the season.
ETSU travels to Chattanooga for a Monday game at 7 p.m.
