The ETSU men’s tennis team dropped their season opener to fourth-ranked Tennessee, 6-1, in Knoxville at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center on the UT campus.
The Bucs (0-1) lost the doubles point to the Volunteers (4-0).
Tennessee’s Adam Carey and Mark Henderson put away ETSU’s Diego Iglesias and Federico Ochoa 8-2 in the No. 3 match. Mark Dietrich and Jacob Olsen of UT earned a tough 8-6 win over Marcos Pavlovich and Roberto Fernandez in the No. 1 match.
In singles action, Carey earned the first point for the Vols by taking a 6-0, 6-2 decision over ETSU’s Pablo Sahagun in the No. 2 match.
The lone Buccaneer win came in the No. 4 match when Iglesias took a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jacob Olsen.
Fourteenth-ranked Mario Toledo scored 6-2, 6-4 to defeat Pavlovich in No. 1 match. Fernandez lost the No. 3 match 6-2, 7-6(3) in a tough one to UT’s Dietrich.
In the No. 5 match, Henderson defeated Alejandro Salazar 6-1, 6-2. Francisco Diaz went down to Tennessee’s Wade Orr by a score of 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 match.

The ETSU men’s tennis team earned its first victory this season over the 72nd-ranked Memphis Tigers at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn., Saturday night.
In doubles play, the Tigers clinched the doubles point with two wins.
The Memphis duo of Joe Schmulian and Richard Magney defeated ETSU’s Marcos Pavlovich and Pablo Sahagun in a tough match 8-6. Diego Iglesias and Roberto Fernandez lost to Ben Stapp and Taylor Lee Walker.
In singles competition, Pavlovich defeated Schmulian at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 7-5.
In the No. 2 match, Sahagun earned a win by beating Magney 6-4, 6-2.
Team captain Fernandez won his singles match, 6-2 and 6-4, over Ben Stapp. Iglesias won his match in the No. 4 match in three sets over Walker. Memphis would not quit. Alex Bucewicz defeated Alejandro Salazar in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Michael Chamberlain beat ETSU’s Federico Ochoa 6-2, 6-2.
