The ETSU women’s tennis team (0-1) dropped their season opener 7-0 to the sixth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols (3-1) at Memorial Center on Sunday afternoon.
In the No. 1 doubles match, ETSU’s Jessica Irey and Tatianna Arriaran were up 3-2 against two nationally ranked players, Alison Ojeda and Agnes Wiski.
But the UT duo pulled away and won the game, 8-3. Tennessee’s Majen Immink and Ashley Robards shut down ETSU’s Gemma Halim and Aimee Villavicencio to win the No. 2 doubles match 8-0.
In singles competition, Irey took on Ojeda in the No. 1 match and was shut out in both sets. Halim lost to UT’s Wiski in two very long and tough sets (6-2, 6-1) in the No. 2 match. Immink took two sets from Arriaran to win 6-0, 6-0. Villavicencio lost her No. 4 match to UT’s Robards, 6-0 and 6-1. ETSU’s Heather Jones lost in two sets to the Lady Vols’ Brooke Cordell, 6-2 and 6-1.
The Lady Bucs return to action at home to take on UNC Asheville at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Memorial Center.
