Former ETSU alumni were remembered on Monday as Todd Stansbury, director of the athletic administration, publicly announced the 2002 Hall of Fame inductees at a press conference.
The eleven inductees, who had been personally notified prior to the conference, are as follows: Jay Baumgardner, Jr., fondly referred to as one of the founders of ETSU golf; Jim (Moose) Brown, co-captain of the 1964-1965 ETSU men’s basketball team; All-American Donny Cook, now employed by City Commerce Solutions; Mike Hulbert; P.J. Leddy, All-American runner; Dr. Willie Malone, 1964 basketball player of the year and an all-conference player; Gloria Kay Parmentier from the sport of riflery; Dr. Janice Shelton, former ETSU athletic director; Coach Joe Blaine Shipley, basketball coach from 1966 through 1977; Jay Shoop, 1969 athletic trainer; and Judge John Walton, an Elizabethton native and a member of the 1969 undefeated football team.
“When the committee looked at the nominees, the [candidates’] careers at ETSU played a major role,” Stansbury explained. “Obviously, their success on the field carried on into their personal and professional lives.
“It was not by chance that they ended up being successfull in many other things.”
Other considerations for nomination included athletic records, sportsmanship, character, citizenship and achievement.
According to Stansbury, the committee tried to go back to make sure that no person was missed from nominations “just because they haven’t been around for a while.”
Stansbury said, “We tried to take care of those who played in the fifties, sixties and seventies before jumping to names that people are more familiar with today. The [Hall of Fame] describes our heritage…it lets current athletes have a real idea where we came from.”
Currently, the Hall includes nearly 90 former athletes, directors and coaches.
All proceeds raised through the event go to the Pirate Club Scholarship Fund and are used to attract student athletes.
“Last week we honored 44 percent of our athletes who had a 3.0 GPA or higher in the fall semester,” Stansbury said. “The money is well spent; we get a good return on our investment.”
The Athletic Hall of Fame is sponsored by Elizabethton Federal and City Commerce Solutions.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for April 6. Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased at the Pirate Club Office or by calling 439-8398.
