ETSU split a doubleheader with Indiana University at Hunter Wright Park on Friday in Kingsport.
ETSU took the opener, 10-7, but lost the second game, 12-4.
The first game was characterized by aggressive base running and strong starting pitching from Reid Casey, who began the game with five strong innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bucs broke open the game by batting around. The inning began when second baseman Ryan Hyder led off with a double off the left field wall. Tim Turner bunted to move the runner up.
Indiana frequently threw over to first to keep Turner close, leaving a large hole between first and second, which Matt Traylor exploited with a solid grounder through the hole, scoring Hyder from third.
Traylor stole second base as the throw went into center field, enabling Turner to score. Traylor then scored on a single by Bryan Crouse.
Chad Boruff then singled over the head of Indiana’s shortstop leaving runners on first and second for Caleb Moore. Moore singled up the middle, scoring Crouse.
Kirk Keithly then singled over second base to load the bases. Third baseman Mike Giroud flied out to center, scoring Boruff. The Bucs scored five in the inning, giving them a 9-1 lead.
IU responded with a comback in the seventh inning, scoring four runs. Indiana, however could not overcome the Bucs’ lead.
The second game did not provide the Buccaneers the same opportunity for victory.
Indiana scored four and seven runs, respectively, in the fifth and sixth innings, sealing the victory.
The Bucs did get a Bryan Crouse home run over the right field wall in the third inning.
