CLEMSON, S.C. – The men’s and women’s track and field teams picked up several individual and relay victories in the Clemson Relays hosted by Clemson University last Saturday.
Sophomore Emily Chaney won her second race of the season, taking first place in the 5000-meter run in a time of 18 minutes 48.96 seconds.
Chaney out kicked Furman’s Kim Roush over the final 200 meters to secure her second win of the season. Freshman Jennifer Habbestad also competed in the 5000m, finishing 11th overall in 20:35.93.
In the relay events, the Lady Bucs’ received victories in the distance medley relay and 4×200-meter relay.
ETSU’s distance medley relay team finished first in a time of 12:55.36, topping Cumberland College, which finished second in 13:19.94.
The Lady Bucs’ 4x200m relay team finished in 1:44.77 to take first place over Furman University (1:47.95). The sprint medley relay team also ran well, finishing in second place (4:08.03) to Western Carolina University (4:05.73).
In the field events, ETSU placed three in the top-six of the women’s long jump. Kim Simmons finished third overall with a jump of 5.45 meters.
Simmons was followed by Kristin Truman in fifth place (5.23m) and Brooke Deacon in sixth place (4.72m).
Meredith Charles placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 7.61 meters.
On the men’s side, the Bucs’ lone victory came from James Grufferty in the 5000m.
Grufferty out-sprinted Fur-man’s Kevin Crosby over the final lap to claim the victory by over a second, 14:53.37 to 14:54.57.
Also competing in the 5000m for ETSU were Brad Yewer, who finished third overall in 15:14.33, and Mike Farkas, who finished seventh overall (16:33.60).
In the 110-meter high hurdles, the Bucs’ Kaylin Chesney placed 12th overall in 16.25 seconds.
The Bucs also had several top finishes in the relay events.
ETSU’s distance medley relay team finished second in 10:25.18, less than one second behind Furman University’s winning time of 10:24.30.
The Bucs’ 4×200-meter relay team finished third overall in 1:31.64, with host Clemson winning in 1:24.39, and ETSU’s 4x400m relay team finished sixth overall in 3:29.96.
Western Carolina won the men’s 4×400 in 3:14.75.
In the field events, ETSU received a couple of third place finishes from Chad Hyder and Rhett Ezzell.
Hyder finished third overall in the shot put with a throw of 13.62 meters, while Ezzell placed third in the high jump with a jump of 1.88m.
Members of the Buccaneer track and field teams will next compete in the Florida Relays on Friday.
Note: The SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held on April 19-21 at Liberty Bell track in Johnson City.
