The No. 67-ranked ETSU men’s tennis team ran their season-long winning streak to five by shutting out Georgia Southern, 7-0, in Southern Conference action Sunday afternoon from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City.The Bucs won the doubles point after sweeping all three matches.

The ETSU team of junior Marcos Pavlovich and senior Roberto Fernandez defeated the Georgia Southern team of Wojceich Nowak and Mark Finnegan at No. 1 singles, 8-4.

Junior Pablo Sahagun and sophomore Alejandro Salazar of ETSU were victorious over Eagles Danie Van Den Heever and Rohan Williams at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. ETSU sophomores Diego Iglesias and Moises Serrano defeated Noah Tyler and Uli Ebensperger of Georgia Southern at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.

The Buccaneers continued their momentum by sweeping all six singles matches.

At the No. 1 singles match, ETSU’s Pavlovich defeated Georgia Southern’s Nowak, 6-4, 6-4. Buccaneer senior Fernandez was victorious over Eagle Finnegan at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 3 singles, ETSU got another point as Iglesias defeated GSU’s Tyler, 6-1, 6-2.

ETSU’s Sahagun defeated Ebensperger of the Eagles at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2. The Bucs won the point at No. 5 singles as Salazar was victorious over GSU’s Van Den Heever, 6-0, 6-3. Serrano of ETSU won the point at No. 6 singles, as he defeated Georgia Southern’s Williams, 6-4, 6-2.

The win runs ETSU’s record to 12-6, 7-0 in Southern Conference play. Georgia Southern falls to 8-9 on the season, 4-3 in SoCon matches.

“We played very well today, this was probably the most complete match we have played all season,” said ETSU head coach Dave Mullins following the match. “Some of our players that struggled earlier in the season, their games are coming together at the right time. We are looking forward to our match with Furman on Wednesday.”

The No. 67-ranked ETSU men’s tennis team remained undefeated in conference play by defeating Wofford, 5-2, Friday afternoon from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City.

The Bucs won the doubles point after sweeping all three matches. The ETSU team of junior Marcos Pavlovich and senior Roberto Fernandez defeated the Wofford team of Lee Porter and Brandon Smith at No. 1 singles 8-4. Sophomore Alejandro Salazar and Diego Iglesias of ETSU were victorious over Terriers Dial Burwell and Edward Moseley at No. 2 doubles, 9-8.

ETSU freshman Federico Ochoa and Franciso Diaz defeated Brett Johnson and Jason Mengel of Wofford at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.

At No. 1 singles, ETSU’s Pavlovich defeated Wofford’s Smith, 6-4, 6-3. Buccaneer Fernandez was victorious over Johnson at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Wofford’s Lee Porter defeated ETSU’s Pablo Sahagun 6-3, 6-0.

ETSU’s Salazar defeated Burwell at No. 4 singles to decide the match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

The Bucs won the point at No. 5 singles as Moises Serrano was victorious over Wofford’s Mengel, 6-2, 6-4. Wofford’s Alec Wilson defeated ETSU’s Ochoa in a tight match 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, at No. 7 singles.

The win marks ETSU’s fourth straight and runs its record to 11-6, 6-0 in Southern Conference play.

“We played well enough to win, but it wasn’t pretty. Maybe we underestimated Wofford a little, but they battled well,” Mulllins said.

“Our guys are doing what it takes to win. Hopefully we will be sharper Sunday and ready for Georgia Southern.”

ETSU next plays at the College of Charleston on Friday before returning home to host UT-Chattanooga on Sunday at 1 p.m., for the team’s final match before the Southern Conference Tournament. The SoCon tournament will take place in Charleston, S.C., from April 18-20.
