The ETSU women’s tennis team fell to UNC Greensboro, 7-0, Monday afternoon from the UNCG Tennis Courts in Greensboro, N.C.The Spartans (6-10) took all three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Sonnia Orellana and Lindsey Peel knocked off the ETSU (1-18, 0-7 Southern Conference) team of freshman Gemma Halim and sophomore Jessica Irey in a tough 9-7 match at the No. 1 seed.

UNCG’s Kate LaCoste and Kristen Adamson picked it up with an 8-3 victory over ETSU sophomores Tatiana Arriaran and Aimee Villaviencio in the two spot.

At No. 3, the Spartans’ Amanda Eutzler and Carlin Kannan cruised to an 8-0 victory over ETSU sophomore Heather Jones and junior Charmaine Luvis.

In singles play, Orellana knocked off ETSU’s Halim 6-1, 7-6 (3) at No. 1.

UNCG’s Peel defeated Buccaneer Irey 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the two slot.

The Spartans’ Kannan used straight sets of 6-3, 6-2 to defeat Arriaran of ETSU at No. 3. LaCoste cruised past the Bucs’ Villaviencio 6-1, 6-3 in the four slot.

UNCG’s Adamson needed three sets to get past ETSU’s Jones, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the five spot. At No. 6, the Spartans’ Eutzler disposed of Charmaine Luvis, 6-0, 6-0 for the victory.

The Lady Bucs return to action today as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Bucs fell to Georgia Southern, 6-1, in Southern Conference women’s tennis action last Sunday from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City.

Georgia Southern took the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Amy Bartlett and Callie Ward of Georgia Southern defeated the ETSU team of sophomore Jessica Irey and freshman Gemma Halim, 8-6.

At No. 2 doubles, ETSU sophomores Aimee Villavicencio and Tatiana Arrarian were victorious over GSU’s Brooke McNamee and Charlotte Bruneteaux, 8-5.

At No. 3 doubles, the Buccaneer doubles team of sophomore Heather Jones and junior Charmaine Luvis fell to the Eagle team of Sally Williams and Sarah Iqbal, 8-1.

The Eagles continued to play well in the singles portion of the match, winning five of six contests.

At No. 1 singles, Bartlett of Georgia Southern defeated Halim, 7-6, 6-3.

Irey picked up ETSU’s only singles win, defeating Georgia Southern’s Iqbal at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-4. Arrarian fell to Georgia Southern’s McNamee, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

At No. 4 singles, the Lady Bucs’ Villavicencio fell to Eagle Bruneteaux, 6-0, 6-3. Georgia Southern’s Ward defeated ETSU’s Jones at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-3. Lady Bucs’ Luvis fell to Eagle Sally Williams, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.

“I am very proud of Jessica Irey,” said ETSU head coach Steve Brooks following the match. “She did not feel good today, and she stepped up.

“She is really beginning to take a leadership role on this team.”

The loss drops the Lady Bucs’ record to 1-17 on the season, 0-6 in Southern Conference play. Georgia Southern runs their record to 4-12, 2-5 in the SoCon.

The ETSU women’s tennis dropped a tight match to Western Carolina, 4-3, in Southern Conference action last Saturday afternoon from the WCU Reid Gym Courts in Cullowhee, N.C.

In doubles action, ETSU won the point after taking two of the three contests.

At No. 1 doubles, ETSU sophomore Jessica Irey and freshman Gemma Halim defeated Western Carolina’s Shelby Fitzpatrick and Shannon Zalinski, 8-4.

The Lady Bucs’ No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Tatiana Arriaran and Aimee Villavicencio were victorious over Catamount team Emmy King and Kristin Cotton, 8-6.

WCU won in the three spot by default, as there was not a third ETSU team.

In singles play, the Catamounts won four of six contests to win the match.

At No. 1 singles, Kristin Munn of Western Carolina defeated Halim, 6-2, 6-2.

ETSU’s Irey was victorious at No. 2 singles over Western Carolina’s Fitzpatrick, 6-2, 7-5.

The Lady Bucs’ Arrarian won at No. 3 singles over Catamount Zalinski, 7-5, 6-0.

At No. 4 singles, ETSU’s Villavicencio fell to Catamount Erin Johnson, 6-3, 6-1.

Western Carolina’s Cotton defeated ETSU sophomore Heather Jones at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-5.

Western Carolina won the point at No. 6 singles by default, as there was not a sixth ETSU singles player.

Notes: ETSU will play at Winthrop today with the match set to begin at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Bucs return home to host the Lady Mocs of the University of Tennessee-Chattannoga on Saturday at 12 p.m. from the ETSU Tennis Center.

The match with the Lady Mocs will be the Lady Bucs final match before the Southern Conference Tournament to be held in Charleston, S.C., from April 18-20.
