Who wants to be like Mike, when Erin is on the court?
Erin Thurman the 5-foot 3-inch point guard, finished up her senior season this year, as an ETSU Buccaneer.
The Chattanooga native is enjoying her break after a not to good season. Finishing school in December with a major in public relations and a minor in marketing, this athlete has played enough basketball to last some people a lifetime.
Thurman began playing at the age of 5 in the YMCA, joining the boy’s team before the world was willing to admit that girls had skills too, then continued to play throughout middle school and high school.
“I just really love the game,” she said.
It was during her last season of high school basketball (1998) when she was recruited by ETSU coaches to become a member of the Lady Bucs’ basketball team.
“I loved the area,” Thurman said. “I felt like I fit in well with the team.”
For four years she dedicated her techniques to the team, gaining Southern Conference player of the week honors during her sophomore and junior years.
Thurman began her career as a shooting guard, then moved to the position of point guard her senior year where she averaged 9.0 points per game, 4.0 assists per game and 2.0 rebounds per game.
The most exciting part of the season for Thurman was when the Lady Bucs defeated the Chattanooga Lady Mocs.
“It felt good to beat your hometown,” Thurman said.
Chattanooga went on to win the SoCon championship.
Now that the season has ended, Thurman is occupying her time with reading, writing and also playing golf.
After graduation she said she would love to go back to Chattanooga to work and be with her family. The support from her family motivated her.
“My relationship with my family makes me happy,” she said.
Her relationship, however, with her teammates is something she will cherish also.
“Although the season is over, the friendships I’ll have forever,” Thurman said.
