THE COACHES: Ellis Johnson (The Citadel ’75) is in his second season as the Bulldogs’ head coach and has a record of 4-9 … Johnson has a career record of 9-15 including a 5-6 season in 1983 as the head coach at Gardner-Webb … Appalachian State head coach Jerry Moore (Baylor ’61) is in his 14th season as the head coach of the Mountaineers and has a record of 109-52 … Moore is in his 21st season as a college head coach with a record of 136-100-2 … Moore’s 109 career wins at Appalachian is the most among active SoCon coaches and the second-most of any coach in SoCon history … Only Wallace Wade’s 110 wins at Duke between 1931-50 stands ahead of Moore … Moore was the SoCon coach of the year in ’91, ’94 and ’95.
GAME NOTES: The Citadel will face its third nationally ranked opponent of the season … The Citadel lost to #23 (I-A) LSU, 35-10, in the season-opener… The Bulldogs had an impressive 24-20 victory over #15 Delaware in week two … The Mountaineers have also played a tough non-conference schedule with a loss to nationally ranked Marshall and a win over #16 Eastern Kentucky … The Mountaineers are coming off a 29-22 win at Liberty which saw the return of QB Joe Burchette and WR Sterling Hayward, both of whom missed the first two games of the season with injuries … ASU leads the nation in punt returns with a 24.9 average and DaVon Fowlkes is the nation’s top returner with an identical average.
