THE GAME: Wofford will travel to College Park to play its third non-conference game of the year … The Terriers will face Maryland, the 2001 ACC champions, for the first time in school history … This is one of two SoCon vs. ACC games on the 2002 schedule … East Tennessee State fell at North Carolina State, 34-0, on Sept. 7 … The SoCon is 0-6 vs. I-A teams this season … The last time a SoCon team beat an ACC club was the 2000 season opener when Appalachian State downed Wake Forest, 20-16 .

THE COACHES: Wofford head coach Mike Ayers (Georgetown, KY ’74) is in his 15th year with the Terriers and has a record of 84-72-1 … Ayers is in his 18th year as a college head coach with a record of 95-93-2… He was the SoCon Coach of the Year in 2000 … Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen (Maryland ’70) is in his second season with the Terrapins … The 2001 ACC and National “Coach of the Year” led Maryland to its first ACC title since 1985 … Friedgen spent time as an assistant coach on both the collegiate and professional levels before returning to his alma mater as head coach.
