There is now a new way for students to feel safer while on ETSU campus. A new program, Rape Aggression Defense Training Program is being offered throughout the month of November.
This is a women’s only program and is being taught for the first time by Kim Bushore-Maki, coordinator of special outreach programs in the Counseling Center. She was certified last summer.
“The goal of this program is to teach women defense that doesn’t take much practice and you only need to attend one class,” said Jon Walker, director of the department of campus recreation.
The Rape Aggression Defense Training Program consists of very basic, very simple techniques with absolutely no athleticism required. Most of the techniques only use elbows and forearms and involve punching and kicking.
“RAD teaches techniques that give women chances to get out of bad situations,” Walker said.
Each session of the class is only an hour and a half long, and the cost to attend is $30, but students need only to attend once. The class takes place in the CPA on Nov. 4, 7, 11, and 14 from 6-9 p.m.
RAD is a nationwide program, developed by a black belt police officer in the Marine Corp. It originated in Reston, Va.
For that reason most campuses, leave it up the police to teach this program.
There is also a free self-defense class offered to students, both men and women. Open Martial Arts Nights is for everyone, whether you are a beginner or advanced in the area.
The classes are on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7-8 p.m., beginning on Nov. 6.
Open Martial Arts Nights is located in the Defense Center for Physical Activity multi-purpose room.
