The ETSU men failed to advance any singles players into the qualifying round of the 2002 ITA All-American Championships at this weekend’s pre-qualifying round at The Champions Club in Chattanooga.
Francisco Diaz fell to Rylan Rizza (6-0, 6-2); Diego Iglesias dropped a three-set match to Willy Gali; Alejandro Salazar lost to Troy Hahn (6-1, 7-5); and Andy Metzler defeated Moises Serrano (6-4, 6-2).
“It was a tough day for our program,” ETSU head coach Dave Mullins said. “We had a couple of close, winnable matches, but we let them get away. All in all, it was a tough time.”
In doubles action, Serrano and Federico Ochoa lost their first round match 8-2, while Salazar and Iglesias received a first round bye into the round of 64 won their first match during Saturday’s pre-qualifying round. However, the doubles team was eliminated from the tournament following a tough loss in the round of 32.
Iglesias and Salazar defeated Tom Murray and Steve Timperly of Tulsa 9-8 in a 7-0 tiebreaker to advance out of the round of 64. But the pair couldn’t get past Johan Burg and Daniel Langre of Southern California, the defending national team champions, losing 8-2.
