THE GAME: Georgia Southern has won five straight from The Citadel and the Eagles own a 9-2 lead in the series that began in 1988 … The first two games in the series, ’88 and ’90, came in the I-AA playoffs with GSU winning both games … In SoCon play, GSU holds a 6-2 lead … Ellis Johnson is 0-1 against the Eagles and Mike Sewak is facing the Citadel Bulldogs for the first time as head coach … Both of The Citadel’s wins came at home, a 17-15 victory in 1994 and a 35-20 win 1996 … Last year in Statesboro, the Eagles posted a 14-6 win.
THE COACHES: Georgia Southern head coach Mike Sewak (Virginia ’81) is in his first season with the Eagles and has a record of 5-2 … He spent the last five seasons as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, helping the club to a 62-10 record during that time … Ellis Johnson (The Citadel ’75) is in his second season as the Bulldogs’ head coach and has a record of 5-12 … Johnson has a career record of 10-18 including a 5-6 season in 1983 as the head coach at Gardner-Webb.
GAME NOTES: The Citadel will face its second nationally ranked opponent in two weeks … The Citadel, which fell to the sixth-ranked Furman Paladins last week, will face the tenth-ranked Eagles of Georgia Southern … GSU is coming off a 36-20 victory vs Appalachian State last week … The Citadel defense has recorded 14 sacks on the season which earns them a third place ranking in the SoCon … The Eagle offensive line has done a good job of protecting its quarterback, allowing only .714 sacks per game … GSU tops the SoCon in rushing offense, scoring offense, scoring defense, and total offense … This game will be a homecoming for Georgia Southern’s tight end coach Brent Davis who played tight end for the Bulldogs during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
