ETSU’s Diego Iglesias fell to Georgia Tech’s Roger Anderson Sunday in the A-1 singles championship at the 2002 South Carolina Fall Invitational.
Anderson, the Yellow Jackets’ No.1 singles player, finished last season ranked 30th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and defeated Iglesias 6-1, 6-4. Iglesias earned the bid to the championship match by defeating Evan Austin of Kentucky 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the semi-finals.
“Diego had a great tournament and picked up four quality wins,” said ETSU head coach Dave Mullins. “I’m very proud of everybody’s effort. This tournament gave us an opportunity to compete against some good teams.”
ETSU senior Francisco Diaz won his B-2 consolation finals match over Sean Voorhies of Lander University 6-2, 6-4. Diaz and sophomore teammate Moises Serrano fell to Rehman Esmail and Will Shaw of North Carolina State 8-6 in the B-1 doubles finals. Rounding out the Buccaneers’ Sunday matches was sophomore Federico Ochoa, who dropped his semi-final match to Georgia Tech’s Marko Rajevac in the B-3 singles bracket 7-5, 6-0.
Mullins said his team will prepare for this weekend’s ITA Region II Qualifier in Chapel Hill, N.C., where the Bucs will be playing for the chance to compete at the Nov. 7-10 ITA Omni Hotel Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas.
