The East Tennessee State’s men’s golf team shot a 289 in their final round of play to finish fifth in the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Bucs finished the tournament with a three-round 863, 23 shots behind team champion Georgia and 21 back of Tennessee.
The Bulldogs had a remarkably consistent three rounds, firing a 280 in each. The Volunteers shot a 276-284-282.
ETSU sophomore Jeremy Hobson shot a final round even-par 72 to finish in a tie for 12th (72-70-72-214). The finish is the best of his ETSU career as is the three-round 214.
Senior Adam Riddering shot his best round of the fall season with a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to move up to a tie for 20th (75-72-70-217). Fellow senior James Johnson shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 to finish in a tie for 32nd (76-71-73-220).
Sophomores Chase Baldwin and Marcos Trejos rounded out ETSU’s tournament, both shooting a three-day total 222 to tie for 39th place.
Trejos shot a 2-over-par 74 (72-76-74-222) in the third round, while Baldwin carded an 8-over-par 80 (72-70-80-222).
Buc sophomore Hamilton Wheeler played as an individual in the tournament and finished in a tie for 64th at 12-over-par (74-75-79).
Vanderbilt’s Brandt Snedeker finished first individually, firing a three-round 204 (69-66-69) and Tennessee’s David Skinns came in second (68-67-70-205).
The Tournament of Champions concludes ETSU’s fall season. The Buccaneers will return to action at the Tulane Invitational Feb. 10-11 in New Orleans, La.
So far this season, the Bucs placed sixth in two tournaments – the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I. and the Bank of Tennessee-The Ridges Intercollegiate in Johnson City. They finished 12th in the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga.
After the Tulane Invite, ETSU will go to San Juan, P.R., for the Puerto Rico Classic from Feb. 23-25 and follow that up with a trip to Tallahassee for the Seminole Intercollegiate on March 10-11.
