ETSU freshmen Sylwia Ziolkowska and Jewel Aldea were both victorious, while the tandem of Gemma Halim and Jessica Irey fell in the doubles final at the Wofford Fall Invitational Sunday.
Ziolkowska defeated Paloma Castillo of South Carolina Spartanburg, 2-6, 7-6, 10-7, in the tiebreaker to win the consolation B finals. Aldea defeated Marilyn Clark of North Carolina Charlotte to win the Consolation A finals. Halim and Irey lost to Nandita Chandresaker and Barbara Orlay of Charleston Southern, 8-3, in the finals of the doubles tournament.
“Overall we played much better the last two days,” said Buccaneer head coach Steve Brooks. “I’m happy with the way we ended the fall, we will keep working hard to improve for the spring.”
ETSU returns to the courts on Jan. 25 as they open up the spring season at Virginia Tech.
Aldea coasted her way into the quarterfinals of the Wofford tourney Friday.
Aldea defeated Netzeli Reyes of Charleston Southern 6-2, 6-4 then went on to beat Erin Donovan of UNC Charlotte 6-4, 6-3.
“Jewel showed signs today of why I recruited her, she played very well,” Brooks said.
ETSU had all seven players advance to the second round with only Aldea advancing into the Quarterfinals.

Robin McCarley of Johnson City shot a 74 to lead the ETSU women’s golf team to a sixth place finish in day two of the Pat Bradley Championship in Las Croabas, Puerto Rico.
McCarley’s 74 placed the ETSU sophomore in fifth place individually. Ashley Barton shot a 79 to place her in a tie for 17th. Alyssa Few shot a 77, a 10-shot improvement over Saturday’s round.
The Bucs, who were tied for sixth with host Florida International after day one, pulled ahead of the Golden Panthers to remain in sixth place alone. ETSU shot a 312 today after shooting a team 322 yesterday.
