The 2002 SoCon women’s soccer championships begin today and run through Sunday at the UNCG soccer stadium on the campus of UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C.
Furman (10-0) enters the tournament as the top seed after going undefeated in league play. The Paladins are followed by Western Carolina (7-1-2) as the second seed, Georgia Southern as the third seed and Davidson as the fourth seed. Host institution UNC Greensboro is the fifth seed with College of Charleston, Wofford and East Tennessee State rounding out the field.
The tournament features two days of quarterfinal match-ups, beginning at 5 p.m. as No. 8 seed East Tennessee State faces No. 1 seed Furman.
The Paladins won the regular season match-up, defeating the Bucs 2-1 in Greenville.
The second match of the day is at 7:30 p.m. and features No. 2 Western Carolina against No. 7 Wofford.
Friday’s quarterfinal match is No. 4 Davidson against No. 5 UNC Greensboro at 5 p.m. The late quarterfinal match on Friday has No. 3 Georgia Southern facing No. 7 College of Charleston.
The late game is a repeat of last season’s No. 1 versus No. 8 when Western Carolina squares off against the Terriers.
Friday’s session kicks off with fourth seeded Davidson battling fifth seeded UNC Greensboro, with No. 3 Georgia Southern tangling with No. 6 College of Charleston in the late game. UNC Greensboro beat Davidson 4-3 in regular season play, while Georgia Southern shut out College of Charleston 4-0.
The winner of the first match will face the winner of Friday’s first match, UNC Greensboro or Davidson, at noon on Saturday. The winner of today’s late game, Western Carolina or Wofford, will battle the winner of Friday’s late game, Georgia Southern or College of Charleston at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The championship game will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
UNC Greensboro is the defending SoCon Champion. Last year, the Spartans scored the game winner in the 110th minute of the second overtime period to defeat top-seeded Western Carolina in the championship match.
All-session passes for the tournament at UNC Greensboro’s are $15. Individual session tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students or youth and will be available at the gate on game day.
