Three ETSU football players, seniors Scott Carter, Kai Shreckenberg and Adam Howell, are among 46 players that have been chosen to the 2002 Football Verizon-CoSIDA Academic All-District team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The district team represents the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be selected a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve, be at least a sophomore and carry a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2.
Carter and Howell were first-team selections, while Schreckenberg was a second team pick. Carter and Schreckenberg were both first-team regional honorees last season.
Carter, the teams starting fullback, is working toward a master’s degree in sports management. So far this season he is the team’s second leading rusher with a total of 281 yards on the ground, scoring a touchdown. He has also caught four passes for another six yards.
Howell, the team’s long-snapper, is a double-major in microbiology and chemistry. Howell has been an invaluable member of the Bucs’ special teams, having been the team’s starting snapper for four straight seasons. He has made three special team tackles this season.
Shreckenberg, a key member of the Bucs defensive line, is majoring in corporate finance and investments. He had started every game this season, totaling 32 tackles, three for losses.
Howell and Carter’s names will now appear on the Verizon-CoSIDA Academic All-America national ballot. The team will be announced on Dec. 2, 2002.
