East Tennessee State head women’s basketball coach Karen Kemp announced the signing of three players to national letters of intent Thursday. The recruits were Holly Moring, Whitney Tate, and Brooke Wilhoit.
“I give my assistant coaches Jim Lankford, Mike Mincey and Wendi Powell a lot of credit for going out and getting three quality guards this fall,” Kemp said. “Holly, Whitney and Brooke each come from good high school programs and each player will add something we need in our perimeter game.”
Moring, a 5-foot-10 shooting guard, attends Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, S.C., where she transferred to after moving from Harker Heights High School in Harker Heights, Texas. Moring averaged 18 points per game at Harker Heights as a sophomore. Since arriving at Dutch Fork, Moring averaged 10 points per contest in helping her team to a 29-1 overall record and a runner-up finish in the 4A state finals in 2002. Last season Moring was an all-state selection by the High School Sports Report.
“We are excited about bringing Holly in because she comes to us from a winning program,” Kemp said. “She will give us much-needed depth at the No. 1 and 2 positions and she can score when you ask her too.”
Tate is a 5-foot-9 point guard from Murfreesboro, Tenn., where she was a four-year letterwinner at Shelbyville Central. Tate has twice been a member of AAU teams that advanced to the national tournament. She was also an all-district selection and her team has won three District 8 championships and two Tennessee state championships.
“Whitney is a great ball handler and has tremendous three-point shooting ability,” Kemp said. “We are very happy to sign a player of Whitney’s caliber and someone out of the Shelbyville Central program.”
Wilhoit is a local talent out of Sevierville, Tenn., where she attends Sevier County High School. The 5-foot-8 guard led her team to the 2002 state championship in addition to being named the WSEV Star of the Season, all-district, and all-region. Wilhoit garnered 12 varsity letters in four sports.
“Brooke is a type of player that all coaches love,” Kemp commented. “She plays extremely hard on both ends of the court and also adds more depth to the guard position with the talent she brings in.”
ETSU opens its 2002-03 season Friday, Nov. 22, on the road at Tennessee Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
