SPARTANBURG, SC – The 2002 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships begin on Friday and run through Sunday at Belk Arena on the campus of Davidson College in Davidson, N.C.
The No. 7 East Tennessee State volleyball team will take on No. 2 College of Charleston in the first day’s afternoon matchup at 4:30 p.m.
ETSU wrapped up its regular-season in a 3-1 loss to Davidson.
The Bucs (22-10) finished with the same 5-15 record at Chattanooga. The tie between ETSU and Chattanooga was broken with head-to-head results, making ETSU the seventh seed and Chattanooga the eighth seed, rounding out the tournament field.
The first day of the tournament will also feature quarterfinal match-ups, beginning at 10 a.m. with No. 4 Furman versus No. 5 Western Carolina followed by No. 1 Georgia Southern against No. 8 Chattanooga at 1 p.m. The late quarterfinal match (7:30 p.m.) on Friday has No. 3 Davidson taking on No. 6 Appalachian State.
Georgia Southern (18-2) enters the tournament as the top seed. The Eagles had an identical conference record as the College of Charleston (18-2), and were awarded the top spot by means of a coin flip between the two schools. The Cougars are the second seed followed by Davidson (15-5) as the third seed and Furman (15-5) as the fourth seed. Davidson and Furman were also tied in conference play and that tie was broken by head-to-head results. Western Carolina (13-7) follows as the fifth seed and Appalachian State (9-11) is the sixth seed.
If ETSU defeats the College of Charleston, they will battle the winner of Friday’s late game, Davidson or Appy State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The winner of the first match, Furman or Western Carolina, will face the winner of Friday’s second match, Georgia Southern or Chattanooga, at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The championship game will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Georgia Southern is the defending Southern Conference Tournament Champion. Last year, the Eagles swept the Chattanooga Mocs 3-0 in the championship match of the 2001 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships held on the campus of UNC Greensboro. With the Southern Conference automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, Georgia Southern was defeated by Pepperdine in a first round match.
