DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the first time in seven years the Davidson men’s basketball team defeated rival Charlotte, 75-56, to claim the Hornets’ Nest Trophy and bragging rights in Mecklenburg County. With the victory, Davidson improved to 4-1, while the 49ers fell to 2-3 on the season.
The Wildcats had not defeated Charlotte since the 1995-96 season. The victory ended the 49ers’ six-game winning streak in the annual battle between the two schools.
Before a rowdy crowd of 5,003, senior co-captain Peter Anderer led the Wildcats with 21 points — all in the first half — as he connected on 5-of-9 from three-point land. Junior Demon Brown led the 49ers with 15 points on the night.
“It’s wonderful to finally take home the Hornets’ Nest Trophy,” Anderer said. “The 49ers had beaten us all three times since I began playing, and it’s great to beat a good team like Charlotte.”

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Flames came out on top of a seesaw battle in the Vines Center on Saturday evening as Liberty downed Western Carolina in a game that saw 16 lead changes and eight different ties.
Kevin Martin led all scorers as the sophomore was held three points under his average, which ranked third best in the country prior to the game, finishing with 24 points on 8-of-22 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the line. Woodyard also reached double figures with 18 points, while Rans Brempong finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.

CHARLESTON — Zeke Johnson poured in career-high 25 points while teammate Troy Wheless added 18 pacing the College of Charleston to a win over USC Aiken.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 6-0 for the first time since beginning the 1987-88 season at 7-0. The Pacers fell to 1-5. The Cougars have won 111 straight games when scoring at least 84 points.

LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior forward Radee Skipworth tied a career high with 29 points to lead VMI past UVa.-Wise.
Skipworth, who was slowed by a deep-thigh bruise in VMI’s first four games, hit 10 of 16 shots from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds to lead all scorers. Sophomore guard Jason Conley posted his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Mike Lenzly moved closer to the 1,000-career points milestone as he keyed Wofford’s rout of Virginia Intermont.
Lenzly had his third 22-point game in the last four contests to move his career total to 967 points. He also added five rebounds and five assists with no turnovers in 34 minutes.
Lenzly was one of four Terriers in double figures. Freshman center Tyler Berg hit 7-of-8 shots as he scored 15 points to reach double figures for the fourth consecutive game. Lee Nixon added 13 points and seven assists while Sam Daniels scored 10 points.

MILWAUKEE — No. 13 Marquette eclipsed the 100-point barrier for the first time this season, but coach Tom Crean was thinking about defense.
Crean credited the Golden Eagles’ defense with a 27-3 run that spanned both halves and sparked a 101-78 victory over Appalachian State.
The Golden Eagles limited the Mountaineers to 38.2 percent shooting and outrebounded them 45-26.

MORGANTOWN, WVa. — Tyrone Sally scored a career-high 20 points and senior Chaz Briggs a good showing off the bench to help the Mountaineers to a win over UNC Greensboro.
West Virginia used a 17-9 second half run to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a one-point lead at 40-39 with 12:39 to go. Keying the run was Sally, who scored four points and produced a steal during an eight-minute stretch.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — John Grice scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Memphis ran away from Furman in the second half for the victory.
Memphis (4-1) opened the second half with a 23-4 run as the Paladins (3-5) missed nine of their first 11 shots. The Tigers built the lead to 57-33, and Furman never got closer than 17 the rest of the way.
