CULLOWHEE, N.C. — After missing his first free throw attempt, Western Carolina junior center Rans Brempong sank his second one with four-tenths of a second left in the game to lift the Catamounts to a 70-69 win over Appalachian State on Tuesday.
Brempong capped a flurry of activity inside the final 30 seconds for the Catamounts. After App. State’s Jonathan Mitchell made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 69-69 with 1:06 left, WCU junior Emre Atsur missed a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left. Catamount senior Kori Hatcher picked up the rebound and missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left. Jared Outing came up with the rebound and the ball found its way into Brempong’s hands, which led to a foul and the game-winning free throw.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Western, who improved to 5-11 overall and 2-3, and snapped a seven-game winning streak for Appy (11-4, 4-1). It was also Western’s first win over Appalachian State in Cullowhee in six tries, dating back to Feb. 26, 1996.

STATESBORO, Ga. — Kevin Hammack hit a layup with 4.3 seconds left to give The Citadel a conference win over Georgia Southern.
Georgia Southern (10-6, 3-2) erased a 14-point Bulldog lead with a 16-4 run that ended when Julius Jenkins tied the game at 57-57 with 5:38 to go in the game. Jenkins, who scored 11 of the 16 points in the run, finished with a game-high 32 points.

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior Mike Gilbert hit two shots in the final 1:03 of regulation to rally VMI past Davidson, 61-60.
The win snapped a five-game VMI losing streak and gave the Keydets its first league win of the year. VMI also won its second straight over the Wildcats.
Gilbert, a reserve forward who averaged 5.3 minutes of playing time in VMI’s first 15 games, made his first start of the year and scored a season-high eight points on four of seven shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds.
Radee Skipworth led the Keydets with 18 points, and Richard Little added 12 points and nine assists. It marked the 10th game this season that Little had dished out seven or more assists in a contest.
Davidson (9-6, 3-2) placed four in double figures scoring and was led by senior guard Wayne Bernard with 13 points while Conor Grace, Brendan Winters, and Matt McKillop each scored 12 points.
