Southern Conference teams lead the nation in three different men’s basketball statistics categories according to the NCAA statistics as of Jan. 14, 2003.
ETSU leads the nation in steals with 13.6 per game. Davidson leads the nation in both 3-pointers made per game and free throw percentage. The SoCon has three teams in the top 20 in scoring with Appalachian State at 11th, Davidson 13th, and ETSU at 16th.
ETSU is led by Zakee Wadood and Tim Smith. Wadood is second in the nation in steals with a 3.7 per game average, while Smith is 11th with 3.0 steals per game.
The Wildcats are averaging 10.8 three-pointers per game to lead the nation and 3.7 of those are from senior guard Peter Anderer who is ranked 14th. Anderer is also 13th in 3-point percentage (48.8) and contributes to Davidson’s fourth place ranking as a team in three-pointer percentage (43.2). The Wildcats are also shooting 80 percent as a team from the charity stripe to lead the nation in free throw percentage.
Georgia Southern’s Julius Jenkins, the SoCon scoring leader, is ranked 14th among the nation’s top scorers with a 22.2 points per game average. Chattanooga’s Ashley Champion leads the SoCon in field goal percentage and is 14th in the nation, making 62.7 percent of his field goal attempts.
In women’s basketball, Georgia Southern’s Tiffany Lanier (4.0 steals per game) is seventh in the nation in steals.
The Lady Eagles rank 22nd in steals as a team with a 12.4 steals per game average. College of Charleston leads the SoCon in steals (12.9) and holds an 18th place ranking nationally
Chattanooga is tied for 14th in the nation in win-loss percentage, having won 85.7 percent of its contest.
The Lady Mocs are also 17th nationally in three-pointers per game, averaging 7.2 trifecta’s per game.
