Deane Webb announced his resignation Wednesday as head volleyball coach at ETSU.
Webb, who finished his second season at the helm of the Bucs this past fall, has accepted the head coaching position at Belmont University.
“I would like to say thank you to the ETSU athletic department for the opportunity they have given me,” Webb said. “It has opened many doors for me and for that I am thankful. I also want to say thanks to my staff for all their hard work in recruiting and help training the team, and I definitely want to thank the ETSU players for their hard work, time and dedication to our program. I wish them the best of luck next season.”
Webb compiled a 28-29 record in his two season a ETSU, including a 20-6 mark in 2001. In his inaugural season with the Bucs, Webb won 13 of their first 14 matches and finished second place in the Southern Conference — their best league finish since 1987 — and broke the school record for conference wins (15) in the process. In 2001, Webb coach the SoCon’s Player of the Year, setter Carey Cavanaugh, and saw outside hitter Nicole Ryan garner the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year award in 2002.
“Although I have only been in this position for a limited time, I have known Deane as a coaching colleage for two years now,” said Dave Mullins, interim director of athletics. “He has done a fine job in re-establishing a winning tradition in volleyball at ETSU. However, he feels his new position will be a better fit for him professionally and personally, and I wish Deane the best in his new coaching oppurtunity.”
Prior to ETSU, Webb led Indiana Wesleyan to a school record in single season wins with a 43-4 record and winning percentage (.915) en route to being named National Christian College Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2000. That same year, Indiana Wesleyan won the NCCAA championship and the teamwas ranked as high as 11th in the NAIA polls.
“I hate to lose a person and coach the caliber of Deane Webb from our coaching staff here at ETSU,” said senior women’s administrator Barbie Breedlove. “I understand his reasons for leaving, and I support him in deciding what is best for his family. We will take immediate steps in filling the head coaching vacancy and continue moving the volleyball program forward.
