We will soon be venturing indoors to visit some cozy places for a few weeks, but first I want to tell you of one more place nearby that you can check out while the weather is still favorable. This is the closest place to campus where you can get outside and enjoy being there.
Willow Springs Park is nestled not far from campus in a peaceful setting with some fantastic views of Buffalo Mountain.
This well-maintained public area has a great playground if you have children or want to act like a child. I have found the slides to be superb, but the swings are just a wee bit small for me. Just be sure to make way for the kids if you wish to check out the playground. While fun, the playground is just one small piece of this 36-acre park.
Willow Springs also offers plenty of open space along the hillside that’s perfect for passing a football or Frisbee.
There’s enough space for many people to play a game without interfering with other park visitors. Of course, there’s room for spectators as well.
A few small knolls at the top of the hill provide ample elevation to watch most any activity at the park as well as provide great views of the mountain and sunsets.
The most significant advantage this park offers is the walking trails. With over a mile of paved trails winding along the hillside, it is a great place to take a stroll or have a serious workout.
Be sure to notice the different landscapes along the trails. You’ll pass by many type of flora and fauna as well as a few ponds. Unfortunately, I have not attempted to check these ponds for fish, but I’ll keep you posted.
If you enjoy picnics, there are spaces available for dining with nature.
The quiet setting so near our busy campus provides a nice break for a quick recharge of whatever it is that being outside “charges” us with.
As always, this park is a public place, but it has some secluded spots.
Think ahead for safety when visiting it, especially if you go late in the day. The openness of most of it makes it safer than some places, so don’t be afraid, just be cautious.
Do be careful if you see a 22-year-old guy being chased by a bunch of kids with a broken swing. I probably won’t notice you, so it’s best to just get out of my way.
Many college campuses have large, open, grassy areas where students can congregate in a central location. Our campus lacks a convenient, accessible common area where people can hang out, play a round of ultimate Frisbee, play guitar or other musical instrument or just enjoy watching other people.
Willow Springs is nearby and often busy, so it may be the best substitute you’ll find. Definitely check this place out if you just want to get outside, but you’re not necessarily an outdoorsy person.
As always, please e-mail with suggestions, comments or questions. I enjoy hearing from readers and appreciate those of you who have already contacted me.
I need suggestions for indoor places, particularly restaurants, which you might recommend I check out, so send them in. If I use your suggestion, I will give you credit for the recommendation.
Until next time, take care and enjoy all the things to do out there!
Directions from campus: Take State of Franklin Road to West Walnut Street (beside Kroger shopping center). Follow Walnut for a few miles; turn left onto Huffine Road, (there should be a sign for the park at this road). Follow signs to the park. Driving time: 7 minutes. 1201 Huffine Road
