Dear Editor,
I was very interested to see the letter headed “Parking Warning” (Sept. 8 edition). The author is correct; students need to be warned about parking. Some of them need to learn that they do NOT have a right to park on private property, in faculty places, blocking driveways, in carpool spots, on the wrong side of the street, in front of fireplugs, in fire lanes, blocking other cars, in handicap spots, in reserved places, blocking dumpsters – in short, they have no right to park anywhere except a legal parking place.
If they cannot find places close enough to their destinations for their taste, that changes nothing. I have seen students park in each of those places and then whine, “I couldn’t find any place else.” (I doubt they went all the way to the west side lot; that would mean walking).
The signs posting regulations about parking apply to all of us, including signs that say “Poor Richard’s Customers Only” – that’s private property. Being unaware of regulations (like not blocking fire plugs) or not wanting to have to walk, or being late, or whatever, are not excuses. If you park illegally, you deserve to be towed. Just don’t whine.
