The Paul E. Stanton Jr. Award has been instituted to raise funds for the 2008 Habitat for Humanity project at East Tennessee State University. This distinction recognizes the guidance and support for service to the region provided by the university’s president.
The honor will be given to the college or other academic/administrative unit that raises the most funds to support the house being built at 705 Franklin Street, just off University Parkway.
The winner will be announced in November upon the completion and dedication of the new home for Teddy and Rita Ingram and their six children. An engraved nameplate for the top fundraiser will be added to a special plaque each year.
The Claudius G. Clemmer College of Education is the current leader, with more than $500 already submitted.
A similar contest will be held for ETSU student groups through the Wyeth Lawson Award, named for the ETSU graduate student, now a university employee, who organized and encouraged student support for the initial Habitat project in 2007.
Colleges and other units are asked to appoint someone to serve as the collection point so that accurate records of donations can be maintained. Members of the ETSU Habitat Steering Committee will pick up the funds and forward them to Holston Habitat for Humanity. The contest ends Friday, Nov. 21.
Checks should be made to Holston Habitat for Humanity and designated “For the ETSU Build.” All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Donations may also be mailed to Holston Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 5265, Kingsport, TN 37663 or contributed online at www.holstonhabitat.org.
