ETSU junior Kristen Russell played tennis in high school but found once she got to college there were not enough chances for people to play if it’s not an NCAA-governed function.
So, Russell has decided to start a traveling tennis team for ETSU players of all levels. She envisions men’s and women’s teams as well as doubles competitions.
“The goal is to give people who played in high school and just quit after that a chance to pick up a racket and play with people on their level, and for people who want to learn to play, to give them a chance for that,” Russell said.
She is hoping to hold tournaments and travel to other schools and play club teams such as the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
The first step, though, is a kickoff event Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the tennis courts on campus to generate interest and awareness.
Lauren Wills, a junior nursing student, sees the effects of such a program as positive and motivating.
“In nursing they require you to work out for one hour a week,” Wills said, “and if I could be playing tennis rather than lifting weights I would be so happy. I love tennis and never thought I would get to play after I got to college.”
Wills said that hardly any of her college friends knows how to play.
She said she would welcome the chance to make new tennis contacts and meet people who have the same love for the game that she does.
To get the club tennis underway at ETSU, Russell is working with men’s tennis coach, Yaser Zaatini who will serve as the club’s adviser.
“We are currently seeking a grant from the SGA to get the program started,” Zaatini said, “and it’s so great because many good athletes will have the chance to play against people their own age as well as beginners.”
The grant sought from the SGA won’t cover all the money needed to travel and for equipment, so club participants will be asked to participate in fundraisers such as selling various items at men’s and women’s NCAA tennis competitions.
Joe Fleenor, representative for the United States Tennis Association, is also in on the ETSU club project. He said that safety and productivity are his biggest issues.
Those interested in playing in the club are encouraged to attend the kickoff event or to contact Russell at zkar18@goldmail.etsu.edu.
