Weird science, demon fighting brothers, and the goings on at Seattle Grace Hospital are among the choices offered this season on television.
In the next few months, all of the major television networks will begin their new seasons, this year without the fear of a writers’ strike shortening their television seasons. Among the returning favorites are a few highly anticipated new arrivals. But the question on every viewer’s mind: “What to watch?”
Among the new shows this season is FOX’s Fringe, the newest creation from LOST creator J.J. Abrams.
Fringe, a solid mixture of Abrams past television hits Alias and LOST, stars Anna Trov and Joshua Jackson, in his first television starring role since Dawson’s Creek.
This drama is about a FBI agent who is forced to join a secret agency that investigates unexplained phenomenon known as “fringe science.” Fringe airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m.
Joining Fringe in the new fall season lineup, as well as the Tuesday at 9 p.m. time slot, is the CW’s 90210, a re-imagining of the classic Beverly Hills, 90210, basically having the same plotline as the original but with minor differences.
Among the cast of up-and-coming young stars are Beverly Hills, 90210 veterans Jennie Garth and Shannon Doherty reprising their roles of Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh.
90210 is the beginning of a new lineup of shows based around the idea of “privileged teens,” that the CW offers this season.
ABC, also going with the idea of reimagining old shows, premieres Life on Mars, a remake of the BBC classic.
Life on Mars is the story of present day detective Sam Tyler who, after being struck by a car, finds himself in the 1970s having to try to solve his own murder while dealing with retro case solving. Life on Mars premieres Thursday, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m.
With the new favorites also brings the return of viewer favorites. Fox offers the return of veteran shows Prison Break and House.
Among the returning favorites on FOX is last year’s hit Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which showcases the adventures of the characters of Sarah and John Connor, made famous in the “Terminator” movie series. The show takes place after the events of T2: Judgment Day and chronicles the rise of John Connor against the coming Machine Armageddon.
ABC has the return of fan favorites Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty. Most notably are the returns of LOST and Desperate Housewives, both of which left their viewers craving more after their shocking season finale cliff hangers.
The CW offers the return of veteran shows Smallville, Supernatural, One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl.
This season finds Smallville, the story of Clark Kent in his pre-Superman days, embarking on its eighth season. Last season saw the departure of series regulars Kristin Kruek and Michael Rosenbaum who played Lana Lang and Lex Luthor, respectively. This season brings the return of fan favorite Oliver Queen as well as introducing new villains, one of which comic fans will enjoy. Smallville airs Thursdays at 8 p.m.
Supernatural, which is the ongoing story of demon-hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, returns with its fourth season opener “Lazarus Rising” which picks up four months after the events of last season’s finale which found older brother Dean trapped in Hell.
This season revolves around Dean’s mysterious return and the powers behind it, as well as the secrets psychically incline younger brother Sam has been keeping. Supernatural airs Thursdays at 9 p.m.
Also on the CW is last season’s surprise hit Gossip Girl, based on the popular book series by the same name. Gossip Girl airs Mondays at 8 p.m.
Joining Gossip Girl on Mondays is veteran show One Tree Hill, returning for its sixth season.
After last season’s four-year jump, One Tree Hill returns to find the series regulars in darker times as they must deal with assaults and tragic deaths. One Tree Hill airs at 9 p.m.
CBS comes back in the fall with favorites like CSI and its ever popular Monday night comedy lineup, most notably Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother.
While NBC has the return of their popular shows Heroes, 30 Rock, Chuck and The Office. Joining these returning shows are the remake of Knight Rider and Christian Slater’s first television starring role in My Own Worst Enemy, a new spy take on the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde storyline.
This season offers plenty of new shows for interested viewers but if none of the new offerings entertain, many of the old favorites viewers have loved for seasons.
When the homework gets rough, it’s always nice to know that with the turn of a channel, there’s entertainment for everyone.
