On Monday (Sept. 22) at East Tennessee State University, Alpha Delta Pi sorority is sponsoring an official “Rock the Vote” event, “Freedom Rocks,” with co-sponsoring College Republicans and College Democrats, as a way to communicate the importance of government and voting to university students.
Invited speakers include several current state legislators and local officials, as well as both candidates for Tennessee’s First U.S. Congressional District. In addition, Connie Sinks, Washington County Administrator of Elections, will address specific topics related to the election process, including registering to vote, absentee voting and Election Day.
The ETSU Student Government Association will also actively participate in the event, which is scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium.
A question-answer session will follow the formal program presentations, and door prizes will be given away at the end of the evening. Students must be present to win an xbox 360 and other prizes.
“Rock the Vote” is a nonpartisan, 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization that does not endorse candidates but strives to “maximize citizen participation” among young people in elections, with a goal of “achieving progressive change” in the country. The use of music, popular culture and new technologies are all ways to “engage and incite young people to register and vote in every election” thus leveraging their power in the political process.
