It’s hard to believe that I received a phone call from the political desk of the New York Times less than a week ago.
For those who didn’t read my column in the Sept. 22 edition, the East Tennessean has been selected as one of 19 student newspapers from across the country to participate in the first ever Times Liveblog event. Editors of the selected newspapers will watch the presidential debate on Friday night, Sept. 26, and then comment on the Times political blog, The Caucus, regarding what students think about the issues that candidates discuss.
However, I do not want to presume to speak for the entire student body. The bad news is, because the time frame was too short I was not able to secure a large venue for participating students to watch the debate and comment.
The good news is that I still want students to participate and have a voice in this important event. On Friday night, starting at 8 p.m., I am going to be logged in to the East Tennessean advice column’s e-mail account, etadvice@gmail.com. For students who watch the presidential debate, they can also chat with me via gchat, or e-mail me comments. I will sift through them, and then try to fairly represent a wide range of ETSU opinions on The Caucus. For more information, e-mail me at eteditor@etsu.edu.
