Tension. Goals. Chaos.
That was how it went last week when the Tri-Cities Krew and the Dream Team faced off in a high-intensity intramural soccer
championship ending 2-1 in favor of TCK.
At 9 p.m. both TCK and the Dream Team started playing the championship game, their second games of the night. The game was 0-0 until the second half when the Dream Team got a through ball in the air, and as a TCK defender tried to clear it, he accidentally kicked it in the goal and scored for the Dream Team.
The next goal was scored by sophomore Zach Stein with help from TCK teammates
freshman Brian Cook and sophomore
Mikey Leahy. Cook intercepted the ball, passed to Leahy who sent the ball through to Stein who buried it in the upper right of the net followed by a back flip for celebration.
TCK scored their next goal when Chad Castainca crossed the ball from mid-field to Leahy who had a diving header into the goal.
That was when the trouble started.
TCK team members said that a Dream Team player grabbed the back of Leahy’s shirt.
The benches cleared and both teams were on the field trying to break up the argument.
The officials never really got involved and eventually the teams broke themselves up. The game was called early with five minutes left and TCK won 2-1.
“For the second goal I played it off to Chad and the defender on their team grabbed my shirt and ripped it from collar to bottom seam after the ball had already been played,” Leahy said. “The ref ran over and gave him a red card.”
“After that all players gathered
from both teams and words were exchanged between teams and it got out of hand,” Leahy said. “The ref blew the whistle for game over and everyone was arguing. I told players to back up and stop the nonsense and I walked away to take my gear off. I was tired from the game and arguing so I walked away. Intramurals is for fun not fighting.”
TCK freshman team member
Cook said it was a tough game.
“There was tension throughout
the whole game. It was very physical,” he said. “All of the guys that were starters on TCK play club soccer around here so both teams were very good and very competitive.
