On Friday the ETSU women’s soccer team lost 1-0 in overtime to the Lipscomb Bisons at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
The intense game seemed to be filled with sequential penalties, fouls, corner kicks and throw-ins. In the first 20 minutes of the first half, ETSU junior Jordan Monty kicked a goal, but was controversially called off sides.
Later on in the half, Buc’s player sophomore Terri Miller ran the ball from mid-field, passed to No. 23 freshman Jessica Hiltenbrand who tried to score just kicking the ball over the goal.
Lipscomb freshman April Horner later ran the ball from mid-field to kick a goal which was caught by Buc’s goal keeper No. 0 Megan Masch. There was also a corner kick by Lipscomb sophomore Kate Spellman which was headed out of the goal by Monty.
With 12 minutes left in the first half ETSU sophomore Kelly Brinkman, A-Sun Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 14, almost scored.
With only a few minutes left in the first half the ball was thrown in by Lipscomb player Horner to senior Sara Green who passed to teammate sophomore Halie Proffitt. Buccaneer senior Meredith Goldman blocked Proffitt and tried to kick a goal which was caught in the air by Lipscomb goal keeper Katie Shelton with one minute left in the game.
Coming back from halftime with the score 0-0, Brinkman stole the ball from Lipscomb and passed to senior defender Ashley Craig who kicked the ball over the goal. Then only 12 minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Rachel Van Horn injured her knee in a collision and had to be carried off the field. At the end of the game, none of the coaches could comment on the seriousness of her injury.
With three minutes left in the game and the score still 0-0 Lipscomb player Proffitt kicked for a goal and was blocked by Buc’s junior defender’s head-dive. Then the Bucs’ Monty kicked in the last minute of the second half but was blocked when Lipscomb’s goalkeeper, Shelton, dove to save the ball.
The game went into a 10-minute overtime and immediately involved a corner kick by Buc’s player Miller. The ball was then kicked by junior defender Kim Jones over the goal with assists by midfielder Brinkman. In the last two minutes of overtime, Lipscomb player No. 2 Brandi Besheres, assisted by player No. 5 Kate Spellman, scored the winning goal off of a direct free kick and Besheres headed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
“We created luck for them,” head coach Heather Henson said. “Frustrating, yes. By not taking care of details created opportunities for them. We had two players and she should have been shut down. We get a foul, they get a goal. It’s about playing and you have to look at who’s on the field. “
At the end of the game, ETSU outshot Lipscomb 15-1 with Lipscomb having nine saves and ETSU having five saves. Lipscomb ended with 11 fouls and ETSU ended with seven.
“One of the things we’d talked about this year defensively was limiting quality shots.” Lipscomb head coach Jon Ireland said, “They had I think about twenty shots, but most of them weren’t quality. I felt like it was a very even game.”
While Bucs’ player senior Rachel Layer disagreed, saying, “I don’t think it was an even game. I think we outshot them.
