In light of the tense argument and near fight that happened in the championship intramural soccer match between the Dream Team and Tri-Cities Krew, the team that won the championship, TCK, will not get their names on the Web site or receive a T-shirt for participating.
During the game that was played on Sept. 25, trouble started when a foul was called and a member of the TCK’s shirt was ripped, and members of both teams began to move onto the field.
Also, as soon as TCK fouled the Dream Team and officials called the foul, TCK began to chant what was considered to be an insensitive remark.
“The championship ended unfortunately,” said Intramural Sports Coordinator Adam Knobloch. “Soccer is a physical game – that’s the nature of it.” But that does not disregard the behavior of both teams.
“The point of intramural soccer is for fun, social experience and good sportsmanship,” Knobloch said.
“We take sportsmanship seriously, and when things escalate, we can not condone that behavior. Just because it’s a sports event does not mean that conduct is disregarded. It’s not a competitive sports league, it’s recreational. It’s important for everyone to remember that intramural sports are for fun.”
Game officials did everything in their power to stop the fight and did everything they were supposed to do, Knobloch said. “You have to remember that officials are just students. We train them the best we can, but when it comes to physical confrontation, we can’t put the student worker in between two teams beginning to fight.
“The student officials blew whistles and tried to break up the fight between the two members, and did not get in the middle of physical confrontation when all the members started getting off the stands, which is exactly what they were supposed to do,” he said.
The teams TCK and the Dream Team have been spoken with, and this event will show all the other teams that the rules are in place for those who do take it too seriously, and they will be reinforced, Knobloch said.
