Dear Editor,
As a member of a Greek letter organization that is not on this campus and an advisor to said organization, I am thoroughly appalled by the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon!
When I was a collegiate member, we had to have events approved not only through the university, but also our advisory council. It sounds as though the active members of this fraternity had a blatant disregard for the rules of their own fraternity as well as the university!
Coming from a campus in Colorado where Greek Life has come under fire for many alchohol-related deaths, the advisors of this organization should be more involved, especially after this incident.
As an advisor to my own organization, I can say that I am glad my ladies have acted with class and sophistication and would not ever stoop so low as to dress in a racist manner or have unauthorized events.
They know the consequences of their actions. The men of Sigma Phi Epsilon have come off lightly with their punishment. I’m sorry, but this organization should be on some type of probation for not only the costumes, but also this unauthorized event.
The punishment needs to fit the crime. Yes, sensitivity training for the organizations for their racist costumes is fine. But, having an unauthorized event should be punished.
There needs to be restrictions set in place so that the fraternity is not allowed to have events for the remainder of the year. If another unauthorized event is held by this fraternity, their charter should be pulled. Does this sound harsh? Yes. But, these men did not seem to mind the rules when they had their party where many other things could have happened.
