One word can change your life. At least it does in the December 2008 film, “Yes Man.” The film fared well for itself in theatres nationwide with Jim Carrey portraying a sad, stiff loan official turned yesaholic. Jim Carrey (Carl Allen) lives a pretty mundane, safe existence; handing out loans to few that request them and spending his nights alone in his single bedroom apartment. His friends, played by Danny Masterson (That ’70s Show) and Bradley Cooper (Alias) continuously urge their friend Carl to rejoin the land of the living. He begins to discover the severity of his self-seclusion when he forgets the name of Cooper’s (Peter’s) two-year girlfriend-turned-fiancée.
Outside Carl’s loan office one day during his lunch break, he runs across an old friend who claims to have experienced a complete life change with the use of a single word; he encourages him to attend a yes conference.
Curious, Carl attends and is startled at first by the obnoxious energy of the crowd and speaker. Then slowly, he begins to realize perhaps all he should do is say yes.
However, Carrey’s character takes it to the excess saying yes to everything requested of him by everyone. Through his experiences he meets the very lovely Allison, (Zooey Deschanel) and begins to fall in love for the first time since he split from his ex, played by Molly Sims. Deschanel is intriguing, mysterious and odd. The two embark on exciting adventures together as Carl begins to realize his true capabilities and thus his true self.
The movie was hilarious, well acted and I found myself chuckling uncontrollably through every scene. The roles were colorful and the plot thick with interesting twists. It was one of the best comedies of the holiday season, nay the year, and I recommend that you go see it, if you’re in the mood for a little romantic hilarity. It’s great for couples, but if I were you I would refrain from taking the whole family, the movie is rated PG-13 for crude sexual humor, language and brief nudity.
