President Barack Obama’s administration has smoothly transitioned from George W. Bush’s White House. Notice that there were none of the histrionics the Clinton White House staff had when Bush’s team came in.
When the Clinton children left in a snit in 2001 they destroyed the White House. A year later, New York Times reporter Robert Pear wrote on Jan. 12 2002, “The General Accounting Office, an investigative arm of Congress, said today that ”damage, theft, vandalism and pranks did occur in the White House complex” in the presidential transition from Clinton to Bush. The agency put the cost at $13,000 to $14,000, including $4,850 to replace computer keyboards, many with damaged or missing W keys.”
It is the sign of an honorable man who took the responsibilities of his office seriously that none of the ‘O’s were glued down or removed on the computer keyboards, no nasty notes denigrating the new president were left behind. The Bush team did everything in their power to make the transition seamless.
If there have been any stumbles in the last few days, they should be credited to Obama. He is the one populating his White House with those same Clinton children, eight years older, but none the wiser.
If the Republicans had been this inept in forming a Cabinet, the press would be howling. Imagine a tax cheat heading up the Department of Treasury in a McCain administration. Think back to the press and their feeding frenzy over Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood, Clinton’s first two picks for Attorney General.
Tim Geithner should be given the same focus, but the press is still basking in the afterglow of Obama’s win. There is no way he is qualified to be secretary of the treasury but it looks as though he will be confirmed anyway.
Hillary Clinton sailed through Senate confirmation 94-2 to become secretary of state despite her husband’s tangled business relationships. Eric Holder is poised to be confirmed as attorney general, the country’s top cop, even though he managed to get fugitive tax cheat Marc Rich an undeserved pardon.
They have even managed to bungle the replacement of Obama and Clintons’ Senate seats. Caroline Kennedy, whose only qualifications to be senator of New York are that she lives in the state and that she has her famous last name finally, dropped her ridiculous bid because of tax problems.
And talk about inept leadership … how foolish did Sen. Harry Reid look when he put up such a fight to keep Gov. Rob Blagojevitch from appointing Rolland Burris the new junior senator from Illinois?
Burris was sworn-in, something Reid swore would never happen. This from the man who declared the Iraq War lost before the surge even started. Reid has repeatedly shown his inability to lead the Senate.
‘Change’ is the watchword for the Obama presidency, but there can be no change when the core people surrounding the president are untrustworthy. The press won’t report on this. They won’t even show Obama smoking a cigarette. It is like never seeing FDR in a wheelchair. We are only getting a filtered picture of who Obama is and where we are now.
Unlike your parents and grandparents, the future is being put out of your individual control. The climate for entrepreneurship and self-reliance is quickly dwindling. Change is indeed coming. Welcome to the collective.
Like Bette Davis said; “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.
