Dear Editor,
The Student Government Association submitted a full-page advertisement for the upcoming campus elections in the March 23, 2009, issue of the East Tennessean. Upon review of the advertisement, there were errors within the names of residence halls (“Lucille Clement” and “Luntsford” misspelled), colleges (one denoted as “Arts and Science”), and candidates (including one of your very own staff writers, Valisa Griffin). The Executive Branch of SGA has contacted your offices regarding these errors, and it was noted that the paper’s editors do not proofread advertisements. A credible publication checks for mistakes throughout the entire issue. Because this is the student newspaper, the election advertisement holds a high degree of influence on next year’s campus leadership. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to print the correct information regarding all candidates – not a layout featuring a series of journalistic mistakes. The East Tennessean should consider upholding the journalistic integrity of this university as its primary publication.
