Dear Editor,
Here we go again and now I’m totally fed up and mad! After a respiratory infection and my asthma being triggered off a couple of times I have to speak up again. I’ve waited this long in the semester to address this issue, hoping it would get better, but it hasn’t.
There are still some “kind” students who feel that it’s perfectly OK to stand at the doorway and on the ramp behind Rogers-Stout Hall smoking. After class last Tuesday, I was on my way out of the building and had to use my dust mask to avoid breathing the noxious fumes from not just one offender but two. They apologized for the smoking but didn’t move much. For your information, the mask does NOT keep all the smoke out. I have asthma and it is triggered by smoke. I have addressed this before and I should not have to constantly stay on guard for smokers.
This campus is supposed to be smoke free but some students still seem not to get that fact. Let’s get some enforcement going here or something, because the students who continually violate the ban don’t seem to care who they hurt and I’m getting tired of dodging smokers who look at me like I’m crazy when I do ask them to move or when I hold my mask to my face as I pass them. It does not take much smoke to trigger an asthma attack and that’s something else the smokers don’t get or don’t care to get.
Oh, while I’m at this, guys and gals, watch how much cologne and perfume you wear. Some of that stuff is extremely strong and will trigger asthma attacks too. I know I’m not the only person on this campus that’s sensitive, I just seem to be the only one speaking up. However, I prefer to stay reasonably healthy and breathing is not an option. I want to live, so I’ll speak up and stand alone if I must.
