It all started during Spring Break when sophomore Jennifer Traynor, 22, watched the news and a saw a story on what a major problem homelessness is in this country, especially with the economy the way it is now.
“I instantly wanted to do something to take action,” said Traynor. “I thought scarves. Homeless. The homeless need scarves.”
Traynor has always wanted to help the community and loved crafts, so three years ago she learned how to knit. After making scarves for everyone she knows, she decided to make knitting her contribution to the community in some way. When she saw all of the homeless children she knew that she had to do something, she said. During spring break she called Jens Christensen at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen who told her that on Christmas they serve 100 people and give them care packages. When Christensen asked if Traynor could have 100 scarves made by then she agreed.
“I have three completely done,” Traynor said, “so only 97 more for the community kitchen and maybe 400 more after that. Who knows.” Traynor is trying to find anyone that wants to help her whether it’s knit, crocheted or just donated. She uses her school e-mail account and facebook, she said.
“My goal in life is to make a difference in this world and give back to the community,” Traynor said.
