Earth Day is an extremely important holiday, and people should recognize it more than they already do.
It’s a day to celebrate our beautiful world that God made for us and a day to do different things in order to help out and make our Earth more beautiful than it is currently.
I believe that we shouldn’t do things to benefit our Earth just on the day labeled “Earth Day.” We should do things each and every day to ensure our Earth’s beauty.
Recycling is one way that many people can help our Earth, and it’s affordable too. It doesn’t take much to sort out your plastics from your glass and place them into separate containers.
You can take recycleable items to centers around the city. A center close to campus is behind Kroger on North Roan Street.
This will save them from being placed into landfills which already take up most of our land in the United States. Moreover, annually people generate up to 4 to 5 pounds of trash a day. By recycling, this number could be drastically cut down. This is one of the ways people could affordably and easily cut down on the amount of trash they accumulate each day.
Another way people can spend their Earth Day is by using reusable shopping bags at the grocery store. Each trip to the supermarket usually entails a trip home with at least four plastic bags in hand that are not biodegradable and usually end up getting thrown away and not recycled.
Wal-Mart does offer boxes in the customer service center where customers can bring their excess bags to recycle, however, too often people wind up throwing their bags away because they are simply too lazy to take them back and recycle them, or they do not understand that buying a couple of the reusable bags can save them from pointless garbage.
The bags can fit way more than one plastic bag and they can be used time and time again. It’s simple.
Yet another way to help the Earth is to plant a tree, and pick up trash around campus or your home even if it’s not yours.
Do simple things that can add up when each person helps out and contributes to the beauty of our environment. It isn’t very time-consuming to spend an afternoon picking up garbage or even cleaning up a creek.
Many times I have set aside an hour or two to get together with a group and do clean-ups in various areas. In the end, you feel like you have contributed to a bigger cause and that’s a great feeling to have.
Earth Day should not just be celebrated one day a year. Every day should be one where people try and recycle, try to reduce the number of plastic bags they use and try to pick up garbage that has been lazily thrown on the ground by whoever chose to do so.
All of these things are not hard to do and if everyone tried to help out just a little bit, we would ultimately get to enjoy our beautiful world a lot more.
