It’s the end of the spring semester and graduation is around the corner. These are the moments some have been waiting for. It is always a good thing climbing the academic ladder, but how does that really affect the communities we live in?
Statistics have it that as the years pass by, many people participate in volunteering and many realize what greatness it is to lend a hand. With volunteering, you can choose what really interests you and is most deserving of your time.
Apart from the fun, volunteering allows you to meet with people with similar interests and allows for new friendships.
Even though it might not visible in the beginning, it may also benefit job possibilities in the future.
Apart from having a positive effect on one’s résumé, it also provides a forum to make contacts. These contacts may even lead to internships or a job.
When I first volunteered, it was with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I wasn’t expecting much until I got there and found out how fascinating it was to be among people who have a vision and love for children just like I do. We all shared the same dream that every child deserves the basics of life even if the parents have no means to provide for them.
There are many other ways to volunteer, whether it is serving food in a homeless center, volunteering to spend time at a retirement community, helping out at a church or taking part at a local park cleanup day.
Volunteering is also the best way to learn new skills – from working as part of a team to setting and reaching valuable goals. A volunteer job that you love can even help shape your ideas about your career goals.
At the end of a project when goals are achieved, one gets to learn how to stay focused and dedicated to a course. If the desired goals are even less than expected, it is also a good sign because volunteering in itself is already a self-achievement.
Boredom is driven away by volunteering; one gets to make good use of time and it is just the best way to give back to the community in which we reside in.
Volunteering is just the laboratory for self-realization and enormous leadership skills development. Courtesy is the only language volunteers understand and everyone should give it a thought.
