Last semester, students at ETSU voted on who they would like to bring in for this semester’s concert series. The results were tallied and the Student Government Association made the final decision – The Fray will be performing in the Mini-Dome Sept. 27 along with Nathaniel Rateliff and The Wheel. In the spring, ETSU did not have a concert because of the weakened economy. It wasn’t because ETSU didn’t have the money.
“It would be sending the wrong message for us to be having a $100,000 concert when everyone else is struggling,” said TJ Mitchell, former SGA president, in an interview last semester.
“It’s more of a responsible decision on our part rather than a fiscal decision.”
Every semester, each student pays a student activity fee which goes toward that semester’s concert as well as other campus activities.
“The way that the fund works, we can’t give the university any of the money because it is specifically for student activities,” said Brian Bowman, the newly elected SGA president.
Any money not spent in the student activity fee rolls into the next semester, Bowman said. Student groups interested in having a student activity, on or off campus, can apply for funding.
The budget for this year’s show was $190,000, less than half of what ETSU paid to bring in Carrie Underwood in spring 2008.
Tickets are free for ETSU students and will be available Sept. 14. Each student can purchase up to three additional tickets for $10 each. You must be 18 or older to receive admission to the concert.
