East Tennessee State University has named the 2009 recipients of Reentry Student Scholarships with awards ranging from $100-$500. The scholarships assist adult students who wish to resume their collegiate careers.Among the recipients are:
Cathy Carter-Bisner, a single mother, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work. A junior at ETSU, she hopes to continue her studies and work toward a master’s degree. The Johnson City resident is a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society. She says that she drove past ETSU every day on her way to work and finally decided to stop in for a visit and learn about opportunities at the university.
Christie Reining of Jonesborough is the single mother of two children. An LPN, Reining hopes to graduate next year with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Jamie Greene, also of Johnson City, is pursuing a degree in elementary education. She had been out of school for 15 years before continuing her education.
After graduation, she plans to stay in school to work toward a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. She serves as director of the children’s program at her church and volunteers at her children’s elementary school. Greene and her husband, Eddie, are the parents of two children.
Leendert Craig is a resident of Valley Forge, where he lives with Rebecca, his wife of 25 years. He originally entered ETSU with a GED degree.
While Craig feels that higher education has changed dramatically since he first attended school, he has proven to be a successful student, with a grade point average of 3.96 on a 4.0 scale. He is studying engineering technology.
Marilyn Yates of Erwin is a senior at ETSU and plans a career as an elementary school teacher. She is minoring in both English and environmental studies.
The mother of one teenager is a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda honorary society for adult students, Phi Kappa Phi national honorary, Golden Key and Kappa Delta Pi education honor society. She participates in the ETSU English Department Honors-in-Discipline program and recently completed her senior thesis. She has maintained a grade point average of 3.97 on a 4.0 scale.
